Because I’ll take any excuse to talk about a Marvel movie, and its recent release on DVD, I thought I’d review Doctor Strange.
This film is exactly as the headline reads; Pretty much Inception but they go way further with the special effects, and really it is amazing to see just how far special effects have come over the last 7 years since Inception was released.
But what differs Inception from Doctor Strange is that Doctor Strange has a bit more of a standard plot line, especially for the superhero genre.
There really isn’t anything too spectacular about Doctor Strange‘s story, and in fact you sort of just go through the motions of the whole thing.
He starts off as an arrogant asshole of a character, and transforms throughout the movie into an arrogant hero.
Now I’m not saying I’m against what the story was, because though it may have been pretty standard for a superhero film that doesn’t mean they didn’t do a good job of telling it.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s American accent wasn’t as terrible as it could have been, and the supporting cast was filled with reputable actors in their own right (Tilda Swinton, Mads Mickelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor to name three).
What holds this film up as a great experience really is the amazing visual effects, which are dizzying and mesmerizing at the same time.
When I originally saw Doctor Strange in the cinema, I was blown away by how amazing everything looked, and I’m kind of sad I can’t see this film in the cinema again.
It is definitely a movie best watched on the biggest screen you can find, in a very very dark room.
Also Doctor Strange is going to appear in Thor: Ragnarok so that’s something cool to look forward to.
